35 Years of Honda Quality!
2006 marks the 35th anniversary of the introduction of Honda cars to the American market. Starting with the 1972 Honda Civic, Americans have grown to know and love Honda products and constantly rate all of their vehicles at or near the top of customer satisfaction polls. The company has changed dramatically over the years introducing new vehicles and a new line, Acura, over that time. Let’s recap Honda’s historic growth and influence on the American automobile market.
Yes, the first Civic was welcomed by motorists who marveled not only over its tiny size, but for its great gas mileage. Early models easily went more than 50 mpg and this particular model, along with the Accord, have been the mainstays of the Honda fleet. To this day, Honda fans are maintaining their early Civics with quality Honda Civic Parts.
After the Civic’s introduction, the automaker introduced two other models: the Accord and the Prelude. For years, all three models consisted of Honda’s entire fleet. As a midsize sedan, the Accord won accolades and praises from auto critics and the car even became America’s top seller for a time during the 1990s. The Prelude, for its part, showed Americans the sporty side of the Honda brand. Both cars are still popular with motorists who are maintaining them with premium Honda Auto Parts.
In 1986, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to introduce a luxury brand. The Acura was born and the first cars, the Integra and the Legend, borrowed heavily from existing Honda models. Indeed, the Integra was based on the Prelude and the Legend on the Accord. This enabled the automaker to limit costs as certain parts such as the Honda exhaust system, Honda Clutch, and Honda Catalytic Converter, could be easily interchanged. Later, during the 1990s, Honda began to distinguish Acura products from Honda products a bit more, but to this day many components can still be interchanged between the two brands.
Eventually, Honda ditched the Prelude and went with the NSX, a true sports model. Later, the S2000 two seat sports convertible showed up along with one of the first compact SUVs to hit the market, the CR-V. In the late 1990s, Honda also introduced the first hybrid gas/electric car to the US market, the Insight.
Today, consumers can also select a Honda minivan – the Odyssey – as well as a pick up truck and midsize SUV when visiting their Honda dealer. Like so many Honda products, many models are designed to share similar components, keeping costs at bay and prices down for consumers. That Honda Muffler on one model can often be used on another model. Honda Mirrors are also sometimes interchangeable too.
Last, but not least, Honda’s newest model – the Fit – is entering U.S. showrooms as of this writing. A tiny car, much like the original Civic, it will be the new entry level Honda and priced to sell at around $12,000. Combining small size with great fuel mileage, the Fit is targeted to appeal to young people much like the Scion brand is currently today.
